Michele Knight
born 1972, McCloud, Oklahoma
Michele is a self-taught artist who, previous to incarceration, made a living as a hairdresser. She has always played around with art. She loves to combine colors and see what happens. Michelle says that once she gets an idea for a piece to create, “Until it’s done, it feels like a fly buzzing around in my head.”
Although Michele prefers textile art using the needlework technique of appliqué, since being at the Mabel Bassett Correction Center, she has begun to paint. To help her get started, a fellow inmate has given her painting lessons.
A special thanks to Poetic Justice Tulsa for advocating for Oklahoma’s incarcerated women and promoting their artwork.
