Asian (Alyson) Taylor

Morrison, OK

Aslan Taylor is a transmasculine individual from Morrison, Oklahoma. After acquiring his Digital Media certification from Meridian Technology Center, he began his studies at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, now working to earn his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts. Aslan’s work serves as a heartfelt and personal endeavor to reach out to others, seeking both understanding and connection. His pieces highlight the complexity of identity and explore themes of self-expression, religion, and familial ties.

Growing up queer in a small Oklahoma town is a harrowing experience for myself and many other individuals. I frequently use hand-sewn textiles as my medium for exploring my relationship with the Christian faith, specifically Baptist views. I enjoy using textiles because the act of sewing itself is a meditative and contemplative process, which mirrors the introspective and reflective nature of exploring one’s own relationship with religion. Through my work, I aim to make sense of the complexities and contradictions of the church and how they have impacted my personal life and identity. My work serves as a quiet bid for connection, an attempt to understand and be understood.

I am primarily self-taught when it comes to my artwork. However, I credit my mother for sparking my interest in creating art at a young age. My high school art teacher also played a crucial role in motivating me to do my best, encouraging me to explore and refine my artistic skills. Growing up queer in a Baptist community and navigating the complexities of familial relationships have also significantly influenced my work.
