Bob Powell
Chickasha, OK
Bob, a native of Duncan, Oklahoma, lived in Chickasha for most of his life, where he owns and operates Casbah Hair Salon. Three years ago, he developed a passion for painting and sought guidance from the Chickashaart center. They provided him with an easel, paints, canvas, and reference materials. As his painting skills improved, he was granted studio spaceand constructive feedback.
Though not formally trained in visual arts, Bob’s experience in haircutting instilled in him a keen sense of design and color perception, which influences his paintings. He uses tools from his trade, like blending paint with makeup brushes, instead of purchasing acrylic paint. Bob prefers high-quality house paint and museum-quality canvas.
Abstract expressionism appeals to him because it encourages viewers to interpret the paintings. He draws inspiration from painters who use texture, neutral color palettes, and capture space.
Recently, Bob’s paintings have shifted from landscapes and seascapes to more figurative subjects. His colors and mark-making become bolder as he continues his artistic development. He enjoys capturing atmospheric images featuring veiled faces or those that appear to be in motion, aiming to capture the essence of his subjects and evoke emotions in viewers.
Bob’s work has been displayed locally at the Chickasha art center and the art show at St. Luke episcopal. He also hangs his work at his hair salon and has been encouraged by recent sales.
