Cedar Micaelah Floyd

Norman, OK

ree

Although Cedar considers herself to be a “dabbler”, she comes from a family of artists. When her father died during her childhood, art became an important way for Cedar to honor his memory, deal with grief and breathe life into her future. She shared, “…being a dabbler is kind of mandatory because I don't have much money to throw at problems. I’ve had to learn how to fix, grow, create, be.”

Raised in the Colorado mountains, Cedar moved to Norman in 2011 to attend the University of Oklahoma, and never left after graduating with honors in 2016 with majors in Anthropology and Creative Writing and a minor in Spanish. Currently making a living as an arborist-in-training, artist’s model and performer, she has worked as a self-described “grunt” archeologist and a variety of odd jobs.

Cedar is self-taught who has not had formal art training beyond high school. She asserts that art has consistently flowed from her since the age of five. In her own words, “The sole reason I am an artist is because I cannot possibly be anything else.”

Cedar’s most prized artwork is made from discarded materials found in various locations, such as dumpsters, gutters, and Freecycle. She uses metal, plastic, fabric, yarn, plastic bags, paper, and other materials to create objects that evoke wonder, humor, and commentary on societal waste. She rarely starts a project with a specific vision, believing there are no mistakes in her creative process. She creates solely for the joy it brings her, and any recognition is secondary.

Cedar’s work has been exhibited only once at the Resonator Gallery during Norman’s 2020 Art Walk.
