TIME REFRAMED
KIM SCHWICHTENBERG
DEC 4 - 24
Time has given me the distance required to process a fraught childhood in western Oklahoma which has gifted me clearer eyes and increased objectivity. "Time Reframed" consists of assemblages made from objects that have been rejected or unconsidered, destined for a landfill. Each piece I make is a bid for its materials to be seen. This process mirrors my own experience of mining memories that I once thought deserving only of dismissal or burial. The obscure girlhood in a seemingly unremarkable place has instead proven to be an intimate mother lode of gold, inspiring creativity and psychic healing. As a fifth-generation Oklahoman, I harness this new empowerment to dissect my family's role in the anthropology and geography of a region. I have created motifs that are inspired by personal experiences: thistles, red dirt, cottonwood trees, twins, pitbulls, rattlesnakes, muddy water, horses...they all represent memories that are significant to me and also represent a broader paradigm of the culture from which I come.
