This is an juried exhibition that contains a variety of media from artists submissions centered around the subject of historical persons and/or events that serve to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or phenomenon. These may be in the form of a story, poem, painting, sculpture, installation, dance or performance. There is also the possibility of a series of workshops that preceed the deadline for entry submissions connected to the themes of MYTHS & LEGENDS. Co-curated by Trueson Daugherty & Steve Liggett

MYTHS & LEGENDS PROJECT

A MYTH or LEGEND IS:  a story of historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon.


This project entitled MYTHS & LEGENDS has two parts:

  

  • 1) The first part will be held during June with a series of speakers, readings, exercises and experiences that will encourage each participant to identify the concepts, images, songs, movements that they identify as their own personal mythologies and/or legends that influence their Life in many different ways.

  • 2) The second part will be a curated exhibition and a night of performances in September of all types of forms of expressions that are presented to show these personal mythologies and/or legends. So, if your work deals with Myths or Legends, then enter!  If it doesn’t we have all of these Lectures, Experiences and Workshops to help you discover your  personal mythology and you can have time to make one.  Details below:


MYTH or LEGENDS EXHIBIT & PERFORMANCES

You are also invited to submit your own Personal Mythology Artwork or Performance in any media. These may include works that are interpreting or creating original: poetry, dance, photographs, paintings, sculpture, pottery, quilts, handmade paper, videography, music, mixed media, video, animation, and creative endeavors that defy categorization. The exhibit will include a platform for digital media work as well to be represented at the gallery and online during the course of the exhibit as well as physical object artworks. Artworks must not have been shown within 50 miles of Tulsa.

There is no fee.

The Artist must ship or deliver to the Gallery at Liggett Studios. Return of all artwork is the Gallery at Liggett Studio’s responsibility.  

Deadline for submissions is August 1st, 2024.

Dates for the exhibition and performances are September 13th, through October 3rd, 2024.

-June 2 – 30 – Workshops and Lectures

- August 1, 2023, 5 pm Myths & Legends Entry Deadline

- August 13, 9 pm • Jurors make Digital Jurying Decision

- August 14, 5 pm • Jurors notify all artists via email of Acceptance or Rejection of the Digital Jurying Results.

- September 10, 1-3 pm - Delivery of Artwork Chosen.

- September 6-7 - Installation  

- September 13, 5-8pm, Second Friday – Exhibit Opening 

- Gallery is open on Thursdays and Fridays 5-8 pm and Saturdays from 1-5 pm

- October 3, 5-8 pm First Thursday • Myths & Legends Closing with Performances at 7:00pm

- October 4, 1-3 pm • Unsold work picked up.

Start out by reading or re-reading our Suggested Reading: THE POWER OF MYTH by Joseph Campbell – order from Magic City Bookstore - $18 + tax. Support your local booksellers!  Allow 10 business days to get your copy.  221 E Archer St, Tulsa. Then sign up for one or all of the following to help you identify your own personal mythologies and manifest them into an artwork or performance.  The piece you make in these workshops might lead you into a whole new way of making art!
