This exhibition explores the central theme “Lace.” The Urban Artists Lab artists are excited about the interpretive possibilities of Lace - from the purely visual and tactile nature of the fabric to the gender attitudes and associations. There are also potential themes of duality - Lace can be scratchy, while the patterns are intriguing and beautiful. Spiders make a kind of lace to ensnare and kill. Lace suggests entanglements. Even the origins of the word “Lace” are intriguing. The word is synonymous with “noose” in Old English and Old French and is thought to be derived from the Latin word “lacere,“ to entice or ensnare. We believe the UAL artists, with their varied and perspectives and styles, will present an intriguing and engaging show that will challenge the viewers’ perceptions and preconceived ideas about Lace.
