About the Event

April 13 & 20, 2024

In  this workshop, Patti Shanks will teach techniques using overbeaten pulp to make 2-D  compositions. Overbeaten abaca and flax pulp is an amazing medium that  can be pigmented, thinned out, used to draw or paint with, and ladled  onto wet paper. Using watery pulp, we’ll build layers of color, embed  found paper ephemera as well as cloth scraps, couche flat materials  between layers, and use pulp paints in squeeze bottles to draw on the  surface of wet paper.

Workshop will meet on 2 consecutive Saturdays: April 13 and April 20th from 10:30 until 2:30. Patti will teach techniques and give everyone plenty of time to try new methods and work on compositions.

$190  covers pulp used; you’ll be sent a supply list of basic stuff to bring  from home. Enroll by April 8.

No refunds after April 8.

BIO:

Patti  Shanks is an educator and artist who grew up in Tulsa. After completing  a Masters of Fine Art in Fibers at the University of Missouri, she  continued her creative research in handmade paper. She taught at MU in  the School of Visual Studies for over 20 years and recently moved her  studio practice back to Oklahoma.

Patti’s  current practice involves the use of overbeaten paper fibers in the  creation of 2 and 3 dimensional work. Exploring paper as a medium where  control and accident co-exist, she builds compositions using layers of  pulp, stencils, embedded ephemera, drawing and printing. She also  continues creative research in artists’ books and papermaking using  native plants and long bast fibers like kozo.
