In a time of uncertainty, it can be therapeutic to create art. From simple doodles and sketches, or weaving and knitting, to abstract painting and fine art, the act of creating helps artists focus on the present, allows them to be distracted from the pain of the past and the fear of the future, makes them focus on their breath which calms the nerves and slows the heart rate, and ultimately allows the artists to share a part of themselves by creating reflections or impressions of the world as they know it, which is the unsworn duty of artists.

This show celebrates the act of creation, how it affects the artist and how how it affects the viewer. Therefore, we have chosen to display art which represents a deeper part of the artist and focus on artistic expression, rather than images of specific subject matter or representation. These sketches, paintings and other images were born from the subconscious minds of the artists. The subject matter was not preplanned or consciously deliberated. When that happens, it is called automatism. This collection of artwork tells a story of how the artists are responding to the world we live in. These are the images born from artists allowing their feelings to guide the creation process, it is a result of the pressures and the stimuli affecting their world.

This exhibit will show the collections of automatistic sketches from 11 artists including the Curator, Todd Sparks: Zach Raw, Aubree Karner, Katrinka Booth, Karen Lamb, Patty Porter, Katie Pernu, Lora Richmond, Brigid Giddens, Brenda Cope, and Linda Moody. We will host live art therapy sketching events with artists and the public who will facilitate and to interpret the live sketches as well as the rest of the collections in the show.
