“Phantom Limb” is a collection of multimedia pieces that will utilize text, paper collage, and abstract painting techniques that explore the phenomenon of phantom limb syndrome—a condition in which amputees experience sensations, painful or otherwise, in a limb that is no longer attached to his/her body. The corresponding key takes the form of doctor’s notes that have been recorded while interviewing the patient post-surgery. By comparing phantom limb syndrome to a fixation on past memories, this series creates a metaphor for the pitfalls of nostalgia and explores the inevitable pain that results when one spends too long reaching for moments in one’s own past.
